Loyola University Maryland has erased Flannery O’Connor’s name from one of its residence halls after a student protest branded her honest fiction intolerable. The administrators acted with mechanical speed, demonstrating that the university now answers to the ideological tribunal rather than to the author’s unflinching witness to original sin and grace.
The protestors and the officials who obeyed them belong to the Managerial Priesthood that has seized Western education. They do not debate the substance of O’Connor’s stories; they demand removal of any voice that refuses to flatter the present creed of racial and sexual grievance. Their victory at Loyola repeats the pattern already visible in countless other institutions where dissent from the new orthodoxy is treated as moral pollution.
This purge belongs to the long war between the City of God and the City of Man. The same spirit that once toppled statues during the French Revolution’s dechristianization campaigns now operates through student committees and compliant deans. Where the Revolution sought to replace Christian memory with abstract rights, today’s administrators replace Christian authors with approved slogans.
The governing principle remains unchanged since the Nicene Fathers defended the full divinity of the Son against Arian revision: truth is not constructed by power but received and guarded. O’Connor’s observation that the truth will make you odd stands as a direct rebuke to every regime that measures orthodoxy by social utility rather than by fidelity to what is.
Scripture records that the servants of the lie always begin by silencing the prophets and end by rewriting the past. The removal of O’Connor’s name is therefore not an administrative footnote but an act of covenantal treason against the intellectual inheritance of Christendom.
The Faithful Remnant must therefore treat every such erasure as a call to arms. Parallel institutions must be built, existing ones must be contested at every level, and the memory of those who spoke truthfully must be preserved outside the reach of the Managerial Priesthood.
Parents who still entrust their children to these captured colleges now bear direct responsibility for the formation they receive. The time for protest letters has passed; only the deliberate withdrawal of support and the creation of rival centers of learning can halt the advance of the lie.
The judgment is already written in the stones of Western Christendom: a people that cannot defend its own authors will soon lose the capacity to defend its own children. The remnant must act while the record can still be recovered.
