The Apathetic Pulpit Betrays the Great Commission

A Christianity Today contributor recalls the Youth Evangelism Conference in Oklahoma where the youth were taught that the most loving act is to tell the truth. That memory now stands against the widespread silence of pastors who refuse to confront an indifferent flock with the full demands of the Great Commission.

The contributor to Christianity Today remembers the clear instruction of his youth: the most loving thing one can do is speak the truth, especially when the Great Commission calls the church to action. Today that instruction collides with the managerial priesthood that fills pulpits with therapeutic comfort while the pews grow numb to sin, judgment, and the sovereignty of God.

The observable pattern is unmistakable. Pastors and denominational leaders, fearing offense more than they fear the Lord, withhold the doctrines of grace, the call to covenantal holiness, and the reality of divine wrath from congregations already lulled into spiritual slumber.

This silence repeats the ancient error that provoked the Magisterial Reformation. When the church in the sixteenth century traded the clear proclamation of justification by faith alone for the soothing rituals of indulgences, the faithful remnant rose to recover the Word. The same recovery is required now.

The governing principle stands unchanged across the centuries. Scripture commands that truth be spoken in love, and love that refuses to name sin is not love but complicity with the City of Man. The Patristic creeds and the five solas together bind every household and every elder to declare the whole counsel of God without evasion.

Where this principle is abandoned, the household of faith collapses into the very apathy the youth conferences once warned against. Souls remain unregenerate, families drift from covenant order, and the nation loses the moral architecture that once sustained it.

The faithful remnant therefore bears an inescapable duty. It must name the actors who trade the gospel for institutional peace, reject the therapeutic substitutions now offered in place of repentance, and restore the rigorous proclamation of law and gospel in every parish that still bears the name of Christ.

No further delay is permitted. The Lord who commissioned the church will not hold guiltless those who have loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
