Justice Samuel Alito has stated that the 2022 Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, required courage from the six conservative members of the Supreme Court. He identified this ruling as the leading example of judicial resolve in the face of entrenched cultural and institutional resistance.
The prior Court in 1973 had invented a right to abortion that existed nowhere in the text, history, or tradition of the Constitution. That fabrication aligned the federal judiciary with the modern cult of death, which treats the unborn as disposable property under the guise of liberty.
Christian teaching from the earliest centuries condemned the taking of innocent life in the womb. The Didache and the patristic consensus placed this prohibition among the non-negotiable marks of the faith, binding every lawful authority under God.
The Dobbs majority therefore acted not as innovators but as restorers. They returned the question of abortion to the states and to the people, where it belonged once the Court abandoned its earlier usurpation of legislative power.
This recovery vindicates the Augustinian distinction between the City of God and the City of Man. The earthly city demands that the strong sacrifice the weak to maintain its pleasures; the heavenly city insists that every human life bears the image of its Creator and must be shielded by law.
The six justices who formed the Dobbs majority rejected the managerial priesthood of the administrative state and its media allies. They refused to let precedent sanctify an ongoing slaughter that had already claimed tens of millions of American children since 1973.
The faithful remnant must now treat Dobbs not as an ending but as the first breach in the wall. They are called to press state legislatures and governors to enact the strongest possible protections for the unborn while building parallel institutions that render the culture of death unnecessary and unthinkable.
Any retreat from this ground invites the enemy to reassert federal power through new legislation or new appointments. The courage displayed in Dobbs must be matched by sustained political and spiritual resolve until the practice itself is once more unthinkable in a Christian nation.
