Onward, Christian Soldiers

Since 1973, Christians have been soldiers marching for life and against the darkest and most depraved injustice in American history.  Every year I am reminded of the old battle hymn, “Onward, Christian Soldiers” composed by Andrew Sullivan, as Christians and pro-lifers storm the swamps of Washington.  We are demanding justice for the nearly 60 million pre-born babies slaughtered in the American Genocide, legalized by the white men in black robes of the Burger Court.

Onward, Christian soldiers!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!

Onward, Christian soldiers!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus,
Going on before.

At the name of Jesus
Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise!

Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one Body we –
One in faith and Spirit,
One eternally.

Crowns and thrones may perish,
Kingdoms rise and wane;
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
’Gainst the Church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise,
Which can never fail.

Onward, then, ye people!
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor
Unto Christ, the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

The Gospel advance is on the march.  And Aslan is on the move.  The Lord’s army has been winning the hearts and minds of the American people in this spiritual war for human life.  But not without barriers and obstacles constructed by the justifiers and compromisers of both the Democrat and Republican parties.

We are fighting a spiritual war that is more than a matter of justice.  It is also a theological crisis of conscience and a spiritual struggle concerning ultimate authority over life itself.

On the Democrat side of this spiritual war are the abortionists at Planned Parenthood.  They justify and advocate for abortion as a common good for humanity, primarily over population control and “reproductive rights.”  They are humanists; they derive ultimate authority from humanity.

Over on the Republican side are the compromisers at the National Right to Life Committee.  They may be advocating for the abolition of the institution of abortion, but they are simultaneously compromising to keep the abortion trade open for business.  As evidenced by the fact the government still funds the abortion industry and their trafficking ring.  These are pro-lifers who derive ultimate authority from an undefined natural law they claim is higher than humanity itself, but it is an authority of neutrality.  They may even have an extremely high view of the authority of Scripture.

Christian Reformists and the National Personhood Alliance are the pro-life leaders fighting for the true and complete abolition of abortion now through principled incrementalism and the preaching of the Gospel.  They not only have a high view of the authority of Scripture, but they also affirm the obedience to the Lordship of Christ.  And the only way to win this spiritual war is not by the immediate vengeance of man, but by obeying all of Scripture and in the plain way that Scripture lays out true justice.

We are Christian soldiers fighting a spiritual war for the abolition of injustice.  But as Christian soldiers, we must obey our General and Commander.  We must obey the rules of justice, as defined by Scripture, with equal weights and measures, and gradually preach the whole Gospel.  As eager soldiers in this war, we must never let our eagerness to see injustice come to an immediate end turn into a bloody impatience where we take vengeance into our own hands, for that is disobedience of another kind.

We must march onward, as Christian soldiers, under the command of our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, obeying all of Scripture and in the way it commands with authority.
